All the world's a stage
And all the men and women merely players;

As You Like It (2/7)

On this page we'll explain what we do.

Crossroads is a online free-form role-play community. The best way to explain what this means is to use an example.

Let's take 'Susan'.  In her real life Susan is a respectable member of society. She is a primary school teacher in a small town, she goes to church every Sunday, she 'plays by society's rules'. She's a very gentle person.

But Susan has a little secret. In the evenings after she gets home from work she plays in Crossroads. In Crossroads she's not a teacher any more. She's also not very nice. In fact in Crossroads she's the opposite of nice. She is a very very nasty, cold blooded killer. She enjoys causing pain and needlessly hurting others. She's also a vampire.

Susan has developed her character over a number of years to a point where she is now very strong.  As a result, she has the power to back up her darkness and is both respected and feared by those around her.

You might ask why on earth Susan, a nice person, would want to do this?.

The reasons are almost as numerous as our players. First and foremost, it's because it's brilliant fun!

For some people it's simple relaxation, or stress relief. In her real life Susan is not able to viciously attack the people who annoy her. But in Crossroads, she can.
Crossroads also gives people the chance to 'play against type'. Conventional people can be unconventional, friendly people can be cold, women can explore their masculine side and role-play as a man and vice versa. The strong can be vulnerable, the serious can be frivolous and the old can be young.

Of course there is no obligation to play against type, and there are plenty of people in Crossroads on the 'light' side - as humans, fae and angels.  In the end its just escapism. It's whatever you want it to be.

Crossroads also seems to be popular with writers. If you enjoy writing Crossroads is a great place to hone your writing, plot development and improvisation skills.

In Crossroads you can be whoever and whatever you want. You play a role without being bound by the constraints of your real life.
